Day 6 - Santiago Day 2

Day 6 - Santiago de Compostela 2nd Day

Today started with such promise with the sun glinting in through our bedroom window and the cockerel next door singing joyfully (grrrr!) from 4am.
We decided yesterday to do a round-the-coast trip to Cape Finisterre: Rob realised as we were riding there that it means 'end-of-the-earth' and it seemed just that both getting there and arriving. Started really lovely, weather-wise, but we rode towards gloom and doom in the clouds and then heavens opened and we had to put on our waterproofs.

Eventually we arrived at Finisterre lighthouse, parked and then wandered to find the actual lighthouse. It wasn't till 50 meters before that it focussed into view and we took this pic.

Misty lighthouse at Cape Finisterre - Debbie just discernible

We went in to get warm and went down to the actual most West point but this was the funniest pic!

Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela

Yesterday Debbie took this photo of the Cathedral from our bedroom window. We walked into the city and had to choose from hundreds of places to eat. We eventually chose seafood and Debbie re-tasted Pecebes (pronounced peh-the-beh-tz). They are like mini-elephant feet of the barnacle family and taste delicious and are quite expensive! Debbie had them when she was 19 on her Tall Ships racing trips - she was cook to 14 sailors.

TAPAS

When in Spain and when you go for a drink you get TAPAS.... these delights are what are on offer so IF you've had a good lunch - like we did today in Finisterre the the evening is spent wandering having a drink in several bars and eating your way through stuff like THIS. In fact we are going here tonight so if you are reading this at about 9.45pm Rob will be sitting where the guy in glasses is!

Also yesterday we came across some Galician Pipers - really cool folk music in the street. They didn't mind a bit that we videoed them especially 'cos we rattled lots of dosh into their collection and we were both impressed that they played so well AND in harmony..... again, I hope this works and the internet connection does not terminate before the video is uploaded and processed.

After a day of rain and finding waterproofs, of darting into cafes to warm up, of wiping visors and glasses we got back to Santiago and went into town to go into the Cathedral. It was mid-service and a 70 year-old nun was singing with the voice of a 16 year-old. We couldn't record (poor taste) but it was quite beautiful and very surprising. We've a video of the organ with double-Spanish sticky out trumpets which is very cool but a rather boring organist who's forgotten where the stops for the trumpets were.

Went to try to get some cash out but Spanish banks won't let us have any so far - we'll try again later and hopefully will be more successful then.
THIS is what the Cathedral looked like this evening - misty, damp but you've got to admire the Eucalyptus tree in the foreground.......and, of course, Debbie.

We're not booking a hotel or anything for tomorrow are are taking pot-luck. Might have wifi (pronounced wee-fee, by the way) and, if so, there'll be a blog. If not then you'll have to wait till we hit Lisbon. I'm rather dreading having to get by in Portuguese as the Castellano (ie proper Spanish) has been going very well..

See you all soon!
